For PDU manufacturers, the UL certification goes beyond standard power strip requirements: data center PDUs handle higher currents (up to 60A three-phase), integrate network management modules with isolated communication interfaces, and must maintain safety during cascaded fault conditions across multiple outlet banks. PDU UL Safety Verification — Key Test Areas
- Overcurrent Protection: Each outlet bank and the main input must have properly coordinated circuit breakers. UL tests the breaker's trip time at 135% rated current and verifies that downstream breakers trip before upstream ones under fault conditions.
- Temperature Rise: With all outlets loaded to rated current simultaneously, the PDU's internal wiring, bus bars, and outlet contacts must not exceed temperature limits. Three-phase PDUs test at 3× rated current per phase — the combined thermal load is significant.
- Network Module Isolation: Intelligent PDUs with Ethernet/SNMP management modules require basic insulation (1500 VAC) between the network interface and the mains circuit. The RJ45 connector's isolation transformers must carry appropriate UL component certification.
